Kanstul Musical Instruments is pleased to have sponsored the first-ever George Roberts / Kanstul Bass Trombone Scholarship offered by the International Trombone Association at last month's ITA Festival and Conference at UNLV. The winner of this scholarship is Thomas Knapp, a student at Texas Christian University. Thomas performs in TCU’s Wind Symphony and Jazz Band, and also with The Salvation Army’s Texas Brass.

After an extensive audition process, the field of applicants was narrowed to Knapp, the clear winner in the competition. An international panel of judges was involved in the awarding of the Kanstul Bass Trombone, and included Denis Wick, Jiggs Whigham, Matthew Guilford and Jan Kagarice.  Knapp performed his winning piece, Ewazen - a Concerto for Bass Trombone and Piano, live at the ITA Conference held at UNLV in Las Vegas in May.

The Kanstul Model 1670 “George Roberts” Bass Trombone features a 9½” diameter one piece bronze bell, nickel silver hand slide, and a single Kanstul Controlled Resistance rotary valve.

The ITG was both a fun and productive show for Kanstul. We showed our new C trumpet to some very good players, and they were eager to put it though its paces. By day's end, everyone agreed, the new C trumpet is definitely one to look at! The new model has been designated the 1510-B, and is joining our other Signature series C trumpets, the 1510 and the 1510-A. More information will be posted soon, so check back.

We also showed our newest Bb trumpet, the Model 1537. A downloadable flyer is available in pdf (2.5MB download). This trumpet features a medium large bore and No. 37 bell.

Kanstul will unveil a new C Trumpet at this year's ITG conference. The as-yet-unnamed model features a special reverse mouthpipe and exclusive harmonic balancer. Designed and tested by Byron Autrey, this C trumpet will have outstanding intonation and response - hallmarks of the Kanstul brand - and will be a must-try at this year's conference. The new model is expected to enter production later this year.

Kanstul is proud to offer an annual scholarship through the ITG. This year's winner is Tim Medoza, a native of Denver, Colorado. Congratulations, Tim, we'll see you in Amherst!

Tim Mendoza was born in 1986 and was given his first trumpet at age nine. That year he joined the Colorado Honor Band Association to help develop his playing and remained a member until his senior year in high school nine years later. In 2000, Tim began his freshman year at Denver School of the Arts, a local arts high school. It was here that Tim was very inspired to play music, and in 2001 began trumpet study with Al Hood at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music.

Tim's music has already taken him to many places and has provided him with some amazing once in a lifetime experiences. In 2004, DSA won the "National School of Distinction" award from the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and Tim was one of a small group of musicians chosen to play at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in recognition of the award. That same year, DSA’s Jazz Workshop Orchestra was selected as one of fifteen big bands to participate in the prestigious "Essentially Ellington" competition and festival hosted by Wynton Marsalis. Consequently, Tim was able to travel to New York City with DSA and perform in Avery Fischer Hall. Later in 2004, Tim was the recipient of the Denver Concert Band's "Young Artist" award, where he was presented with a cash prize and an opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Denver Concert Band. As a result, Tim was featured in an article that comes out every year in the /Rocky Mountain News/ called "Going Places.”

Tim has also traveled abroad with his trumpet. In the summer of 2004, Tim went on a concert tour of Austria and Hungary with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra led by the Colorado Symphony's Adam Flatt. On this tour, Tim played in many great venues throughout these countries, including the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. For five months in 2006, Tim studied music abroad at the Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane, Australia as a University of Denver Cherrington Global Scholar.

Currently, Tim is pursuing a degree in Classical Performance as a junior at the Lamont School of Music, where he still studies jazz and classical trumpet with Al Hood.

We had an Olds reunion of sorts at the recent ITG conference at Rowan University in New Jersey. At left is Virginia Craig, who was a horn tester at the Olds factory in Fullerton, CA. In the center is R. Dale Olson, former head of R & D, and at right is Virginia's husband Alan.

July 27, 2006

We had a visit the other day by an avid collector of Olds trumpets. John, also known as "A.N.A. Mendez" on TrumpetMaster.com, was kind enough to tell us about his experience at the factory that day, and about meeting Zig:

"I was looking for info on an unusual bore marking on a 1930s "The Olds" trumpet. After contacting Dale Olson we decided to meet and take measurments on various older Olds trumpets. He asked me to bring four to six horns up to Anaheim and meet him at the Kanstul factory. The ones he wanted to examine were all very early trumpets mostly ones with bore markings on the 2nd valve such as M, LM, SYM etc.
He used a set of discs that Mr. Kanstul had at the factory"
"The process of measurement on a lead pipe takes time and patience as each disc varies by only .002 of an inch. A total of 20-30 discs might be put into the pipe up to 2 times each to find out the degree and location of larger or smaller graduations along the length of it. After 3 hours we only got 4 trumpets done, and Mr. Olson will take the data and make some charts to figure out what the differences are on each designation."
"I was very happy to meet both of these gentlemen and hope to look at and measure some more trumpets in the future. I would also like to say Mr. Kanstul looks to have a very good operation with loyal, hard-working craftsmen and women working with him. It was a very interesting day. I thank Mr. Olson and Mr. Kanstul for making me feel comfortable."

Pictured are James De La Garza (right)and Kanstul Trumpet Artist / Clinician Tim Wendt (left), in the pit for Broadway's "Beauty and the Beast" and their Kanstul Piccs. James plays a CCT 920, and Tim plays a gold-plated ZKT 1520. "Beauty" is the 6th-longest running show in Broadway history, currently playing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on W. 46th Street. James is the regular 2nd trumpet on the show, but at this performance he was playing 1st trumpet and Tim was subbing in on 2nd. Both trumpet parts in "Beauty" call for piccolo trumpet. James and Tim also studied with a good friend of the Kanstul company, Charley Davis.

March 27, 2006

Kanstul hosted a "play along" with the USAF Concert Band Principal and Solo Euphoniumist William Jones last week. The informal meet-and-greet and clinic was followed by a Master Class and recital on Saturday at nearby Biola University. Will was gracious and informative, and is a fabulous euphonium player. He played the Kanstul CEU 975 Compensating System Euphonium, and offered advice on pedagogy and technique. Pictures of the recital are forthcoming, but here are a few pics from the informal meeting in the Kanstul showroom last week. These picture were taken early, because nearly 50 euphonium players from all over southern California showed up! In the pictures below, you'll see just a few of the players, along with the Kanstul euphonium with brass, bronze, and copper bells. Will Jones can be seen playing the copper bell.
